A Self-Portrait Exploration

the after effects of a happy fourth of july

Lets be honest: we've all felt our creativity and passion for photography wane from time to time. Perhaps we've been too busy photographing clients and haven't photographed for ourselves in too long, or maybe we aren't working enough. Whatever the case may be I'm here to tell you that I have a solution :)

Start a self-portrait project.

I'm telling you: you won't regret it.

I discovered some of my favourite photographers through their own self-portrait projects.
Honestly, the benefits speak for themselves:

Benefits of taking part in a self-portrait project:

  • You don't have to go far to find a great subject. You are always available, and you can take as long as you want to get the perfect shot.
  • You learn the ins and outs of your camera, improve your skills and grow as a photographer.
  • You make the rules: you have control over the artistic tone of your photographs and can be as creative as you like.
  • It's a great (and original!) way to document one year of your life
  • At the end of your project you can make a book of your self-portraits using Blurb.
  • It is a well-known fact that creatives (writers, artists, photographers etc) do, do do. Taking a self-portrait a day is just more doing. It helps you to get in the habit of taking pictures every day.
  • "In the simple act of letting the model be photographer, the dynamic of the photo changes - as does the energy - and therefore the final image."
  • It's a great conversation starter!

we sing. we dance. we steal things
